Working in live sound is one of the most rewarding careers in the entertainment industry, but it is also one of the most stressful. Every show is effectively a live exam. There are no second chances, no reset button, and no opportunity to tell 20,000 people you’ll try again tomorrow. When the lights go down and the artist walks on stage, the audience expects perfection, and so does everyone else on the production.

After more than 25 years of touring around the world, I’ve learned something important about stress: it never completely disappears. What changes is how you manage it. The engineers who survive decades on the road aren’t necessarily the smartest or the most technically gifted. They’re the ones who learn to stay calm under pressure and make good decisions when everyone else is panicking.

Stress Is Part of the Job

Let’s be honest. Live sound is controlled chaos.

A normal day might involve:

• Flying overnight into a new country.
• Sleeping only a few hours.
• Dealing with customs delays.
• Loading into an unfamiliar venue.
• Discovering equipment that isn’t exactly what was specified.
• Solving unexpected technical problems.
• Mixing a world-class performance in front of thousands of people.

And tomorrow you’ll do it all over again.

If you’re waiting for touring to become stress-free, you’re waiting for something that will never happen. Instead, successful engineers learn to accept stress as part of the profession rather than something to fear.

The goal isn’t to eliminate stress. The goal is to stop stress from controlling your decisions.

Preparation Reduces Anxiety

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that confidence comes from preparation.

Most stressful situations become manageable when you’ve already prepared for them.

Before every show I like to mentally walk through the entire day.

What happens if the console crashes?

What if the playback rig fails?

What if an RF frequency suddenly disappears?

What if a musician loses their in-ear mix?

Having backup plans doesn’t make you pessimistic—it makes you confident.

When something unexpected happens, you’re not inventing solutions under pressure. You’re simply executing a plan you’ve already considered.

Preparation turns panic into procedure.

Don’t Borrow Tomorrow’s Problems

Touring often involves long schedules.

Maybe today is the first of fifteen consecutive shows.

Maybe tomorrow involves a six-hour drive followed by a festival.

Maybe there’s an important television performance next week.

It’s easy to carry tomorrow’s stress into today’s work.

I’ve learned that this rarely helps.

The only show you can control is the one you’re mixing today.

Worrying about tomorrow doesn’t improve tomorrow—it only distracts you from today.

Focus on the task directly in front of you.

Finish today’s show.

Then think about tomorrow.

Control What You Can

There are countless things outside your control:

Weather.

Traffic.

Delayed flights.

Late trucks.

Venue power issues.

Artist schedule changes.

Equipment failures.

Production decisions.

Spending energy worrying about things you cannot influence simply drains the energy you need for things you can control.

Instead, ask yourself one simple question:

“What can I do right now that improves the situation?”

That question shifts your brain from worrying into problem-solving.

And problem-solving is exactly what audio engineers do best.

Learn to Slow Down During Emergencies

One of the strange things about experience is that you actually appear to move slower during a crisis.

In reality, you’re simply thinking more clearly.

When panic spreads backstage, inexperienced people tend to speed up.

Experienced engineers slow down.

They take one breath.

Assess the situation.

Prioritize.

Then act.

Fast decisions made calmly are almost always better than rushed decisions made emotionally.

If you’ve ever watched experienced crew members solve major problems, you’ll notice something interesting:

They rarely look stressed.

That doesn’t mean they aren’t feeling pressure.

It means they’ve learned not to let pressure dictate their actions.

Your Body Affects Your Mind

Stress isn’t only psychological.

It’s physical.

Poor sleep.

Too much caffeine.

Too much alcohol.

Not enough water.

Skipping meals.

Living on catering desserts and airport fast food.

These things slowly reduce your ability to think clearly.

I’ve learned that the days I perform my best are usually the days I’ve looked after my body first.

Drink water.

Eat actual meals.

Move your body.

Go for a walk outside the venue.

Stretch before load-in.

Even fifteen minutes of exercise can dramatically improve your mood for the rest of the day.

The console isn’t the only piece of equipment that needs maintenance.

So do you.

Build Good Relationships

One of the greatest stress reducers on tour isn’t better equipment.

It’s better people.

If you’ve built trust with your crew, everyone helps solve problems together.

Nobody enjoys working with someone who blames others every time something goes wrong.

Likewise, nobody enjoys working with someone who disappears when problems appear.

The best crews I’ve worked with operate like families.

Everyone wants the show to succeed.

Everyone helps.

Everyone communicates.

Strong relationships reduce stress because you know you’re never solving problems alone.

Don’t Take Every Problem Personally

Every engineer makes mistakes.

Every tour has difficult days.

Every production experiences technical failures.

That doesn’t make you a bad engineer.

One of the biggest sources of stress is perfectionism.

We replay mistakes in our minds for days.

“What if I’d done this differently?”

“What if I’d caught that earlier?”

Learn from mistakes—but don’t live inside them.

After every show, ask yourself:

What went well?

What could improve?

Then move forward.

Every show is another opportunity to become better.

Create Small Routines

Touring constantly changes.

Different cities.

Different hotels.

Different venues.

Different time zones.

One thing that helps reduce stress is creating routines that remain consistent wherever you are.

Mine are simple.

Coffee.

A short walk.

Checking today’s schedule.

Preparing my session.

Listening to music before doors open.

These routines create familiarity inside an unpredictable lifestyle.

They tell your brain:

“We’ve done this before.”

And that’s surprisingly calming.

Remember Why You Started

On difficult days it’s easy to forget how fortunate this career really is.

Yes, touring is exhausting.

Yes, it’s stressful.

Yes, we miss birthdays, holidays and family events.

But we also get to do something very few people ever experience.

We help create moments that audiences remember for the rest of their lives.

Thousands of people sing together.

Artists achieve lifelong dreams.

Fans create memories they’ll talk about decades later.

And somehow, we’re part of making that happen.

Whenever stress starts to outweigh gratitude, I remind myself of that.

Final Thoughts

Stress will always be part of life on the road. In many ways, it’s the price we pay for working in one of the most exciting industries in the world.

The key isn’t to avoid pressure—it’s to grow stronger because of it.

Prepare thoroughly. Stay calm. Look after your health. Build great relationships. Focus on what you can control, and let go of what you can’t.

Over time you’ll discover something remarkable.

The situations that once felt overwhelming slowly become routine.

Not because the job became easier.

Because you became better.

At the end of the day, great live sound isn’t just about microphones, consoles or loudspeakers.

It’s about the person standing behind them.

And the calmer that person remains, the better every show will be.
